Encouraging words from Cistercian monk Fr. Thomas Keating,
writing about “the affirmation of our basic goodness:”
“In Christian terms it is the fact that we are created in
the image of God, and this goodness can never be lost by any amount of
misbehavior. It is always there. It is God’s permanent gift to us. Even if it
covered over by layers of psychological damage and misbehavior, it can always
revive. You just have to give it the chance to express itself by reducing the
obstacles.” (Divine Therapy and Addiction, p. 105)
And what are the obstacles within you? In prayer, ask the
Lord to help you become aware of them, and, when you are aware, then ask him to
help you clear them away.
