You are not your thoughts. You are the thinker of your
thoughts. Once you realize this, you are free, because rather than letting you
thoughts own you, you can choose to allow them to move through you without
carrying you with them.
Think of it this way: there is a set of train tracks going
through your mind. A train enters your mind carrying a thought. If you are
mindful (free), you can observe the thought on the train as it passes through
your mind. If you are not mindful, the thought can pull you on to the train and
take you away with it.
Introduction to meditation: Just sit calmly and observe your
breathing. If a thought arises, acknowledge it and let it pass on. If a though
carries you away and you realize it, you can quickly and gently return your
attention to your breath and let things calm down again.
